On Friday, Saturday, June 6 and 7 2014 the Food Bank will collect food donations in order to provide assistance to deprived people in Lleida.
The food will be collected at several supermarkets and it is distributed it to social entities for their distribution. These campaigns are vital to ensuring the ongoing work of the food bank year around, as well as reinforcing the capacity for aid operations of the receiving entities.
According to the Federation of Food Banks, 20% of the Spanish population live in households with incomes of less than 50% of the median per capita income. It is for that reason and in the light of a surplus of food that would otherwise be lost that food collection campaign assuring its redistribution towards the poorer sectors of society, what makes it so important and useful.
Non-perishable food items requested by food banks are: milk, cereal, olive oil, canned fish, baby food…
Lleida.net supports this initiative by the call for giving and sharing.
The challenge is to exceed last year’s collection (111,801 kg of food) and 1,000 volunteers over 140 collection points (located in different supermarkets throughout the province) will do their best for achieving it.
